[edit] Box Office Poison
Misty Woods became lead singer of cult south London 'pop noir' band Box Office Poison in 1996, replacing Debbie Detroit. She recorded a number of singles, tracks for compilation albums and one album, "Heavy Breathing Decade" (Future Legend Records, 1997) with the band[1]. However, the releases were unsuccessful critically and commercially and she left the band in 2000.
[edit] Molotova
Between 1997-2001 Woods was lead singer of Molotova, with guitarist Karen Holland and keyboard player Yannick Muet[2]. The band released a single album, "Warm Up", in 1999, and featured in the 2000 In The City festival. Woods left the band in 2001, with Holland and Muet going on to form the band Ninotchka, who have periodically toured in London with limited success ever since[3].
[edit] Ed Ball
From 1999-2001 Misty worked with Ed Ball, former guitarist, singer and founder member of the Television Personalities and The Times. The collaboration resulted in a single album release, "Pirate Playlist 66" (Creation, 1999); however, Woods was not listed on the album credits.
[edit] Ju Ju Babies
Woods & London-based DJ DJ Stix formed the Ju Ju Babies in 2001, together with drummer David Lockwood. While the band only released a single four-track EP ("Electrotrash", No Head Required, 2004), the band were extremely influential on the early electroclash scene[4], and a number of bands cited them as a major influence; Russell Mael of Sparks describing them as "Undoubtedly the coolest un-signed group in the UK, and maybe the coolest of the signed too" in 2002[5].
The Ju Ju babies were characterised by their deliberately poor quality sound and lyrics, and by their unusual clothing, with Woods generally appearing on stage wearing clothing made from bin liners and hazard tape, a style later copied by an number of other female and transvestite performers on the London club, gay and goth music scenes.
In 2004 the band were the resident live band at the weekly Manumission club night at Privilege, the world's largest nightclub[6], for a three month period.
Following the Manumission residency, the Ju Ju Babies split to pursue other projects.
[edit] GDM
In 2006 Misty joined with The Grid members Richard Norris and Dave Ball to form Misty Woods & GDM. The band were characterised by a more electronic sound than her previous projects. The band did not release any recorded material, but played a number of major shows, most notably a bizarre and somewhat inappropriate appearance at the Whitby Gothic Weekend[7]. Misty continues to work with Dave Ball, although recent public appearances have been rare.
