Mobotropolis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mobotropolis is the fictional capital city of the equally fictious planet Mobius. It appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon series (known as "SatAM" by fans), the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series published by Archie Comics, and the Sonic Underground cartoon.
[edit] Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon and comic book
In these two continuities, Mobotropolis had once been ruled by the House of Acorn, until King Acorn had been deposed by his treacherous War Minister, Julian Kintobor, who later adopted the sinister moniker of Dr. Robotnik. Julian was a trusted advisor of the king, but was evil at heart. The king, and the rest of the royal family, were sent into exile. As soon as Julian, who had now renamed himself as "Robotnik" (Kintobor spelled backwards) took over, he roboticized the citizens (as many as his army could get). The city was then rechristened Robotropolis.
In the cartoon, Robotropolis was the seat of Robotnik's power until the final episode, titled Doomsday Project. In it, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sally Acorn used the Deep Power Stones to halt Robotnik's plans and drive him away from the city.
It had a similar fate in the comics, where Robotnik himself was deposed (by being wiped from existence when one of his latest weapons of mass destruction backfired on him), and the House of Acorn resumed power, restoring Mobotropolis temporarily to its former glory. However, the arrival of an alternate universe version of Robotnik spelled disaster for Mobotropolis, which once again became Robotropolis. Robotropolis was then destroyed in a nuclear strike by Station Square. The harmful fallout is currently kept within the former site of the city by a shield originally designed to protect Robotropolis. In the miniseries Mobius: 25 Years Later, Mobotroplis appears to have been retaken and managed to rebuild it, as Rotor the Walrus was seen disembarking from a ship that had departed from Mobotropolis when he arrived on Portal, Angel Island.
[edit] Sonic Underground
In series Sonic Underground, the former ruler of Mobotropolis had been Sonic's mother, Queen Aleena Hedgehog who has been said to be the rightful ruler. The city was in this cartoon as well attacked and conquered by Robotnik, and the queen fled the city. Sonic himself, along with his siblings Manic and Sonia, were heirs to the throne, and fated to one day form a council of four with their mother and take back control of Mobius.
In look and design, Robotropolis in Sonic Underground is exactly like it was in "SatAM"; however, the Robotropolis in Sonic Underground is still inhabited by Mobians, possessing a run-down slum for the underclasses and more upscale areas for the aristocratic elite.
[edit] Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie
In Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, Robotropolis is the massive techno-city constructed by Robotnik in the Land of Darkness and is near or in a post-apocalyptic city which resembles New York City, though Mobotropolis is not referred to and the name for the city in the Japanese version is Eggmanland. It has been theorized that the name was changed to Robotropolis as a tie-in with the American continuity, like the reference to Princess Sally in the Sonic CD manual.
