Moncton East (French: Moncton-est) is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. It has been held by only two individuals both of whom served as Premier of New Brunswick. Ray Frenette, a Liberal who served as premier from 1997 to 1998, represented the district from its creation for the 1974 election until he resigned in 1998. Bernard Lord, a Progressive Conservative who served as premier from 1999 to 2006, won the seat in a by-election after Frenette's resignation until his own resignation on January 31, 2007.
[edit] 2007 by-election
As a result of Lord's resignation, a by-election had to be called within six months of January 31, 2007. The date has been set for March 5, 2007. The governing Liberals are hopeful that they can win the seat as it was held by Liberal Ray Frenette from 1974 to 1998 and because they are showing strength in recent opinion polls across the province.

- The Liberal leader, Premier Shawn Graham, said he would not interefere in the nomination process, leaving it up to the riding to determine a candidate but that, as he has only 3 women in his caucus, he added that he "will be actively searching for women to run".[1] Of the three candidates there were two men (Chris Collins, Daniel LeBlanc) and one woman (Gilberte Losier. Chris Collins, a Moncton City Councillor, was nominated to as the Liberal Candidate for Moncton East.
- Chad Peters, a staffer with the Conservative Party's legislative office was nominated on February 10, 2007. [2]
- Hélène Lapointe, a former president of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party, is the only candidate seeking her party's nomination on February 17, 2007. [3]
