Monica Wood ( 1953- )
Ms. Wood was born in Mexico, Maine to hard-working paper mill employed parents. Her ancestors moved down from Prince Edward Island and were very fond of storytelling. Following in their footsteps, Monica and her family grew up sharing and creating stories quite often. Her father shared with her that stories should be told in a using beautiful grammar, among other things. She also claims to have read a lot as a child. In an interview, she goes into some detail about her family. She had a unique one at that. She explained that there were basically two generations of her siblings. The year she was born, her eldest brother went into the air force and her sister, Anne, would soon become her English teacher. She has another sister who is mentally-retarded, which has kept all of her siblings close an for her special needs for them. Also, her parents died young which was a great tragedy. Because of this diversity she creates characters in her stories that come from different combinations of families. She claims hat she tries to make these people as realistic as possible. Though she writes fiction, many of her works center around family dynamics - a result of the close family life she has enjoyed. In her stories, there is a definite value of "family first".
She now resides in Portland, Oregon. Something interesting that I learned about Monica Wood was that she works in her own backyard. She believes very strongly to separate work and family so her husband built her a studio in their backyard for her to write and create more stories. She has written many short stories and five novels. Her short stories have been featured in many anthologies. Her books are called, "Any Bitter Thing", "Ernie's Ark", "My Only Story", "Secret Language" and "The Pocket Muse." She also writes inspiring aricles and teaches workshops for prospective writers. She says, "The best advice I have for aspiring writers is to read, read, read. Read everybody; you're bound to find that one writer who seems to write only for you, and it will be an exhilarating, life-changing discovery."
