Montabaur is a municipality in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, capital of the Westerwaldkreis district. It is located in the Westerwald, approx. 20 km northeast of Koblenz. About 13,000 people live in the city, while the district is home to about 40,000. Montabaur has a train station on the ICE line Cologne-Frankfurt. The town's main landmark is a stately yellow castle (Schloss Montabaur) on top of Mount Tabor, which was built from ~1217. Today the castle serves as a 4-star hotel for those attending the centre for further training, maintained by the "Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken", a German bank.
The United Internet AG, that also owns 1&1 and gmx, and is one of the fastest growing internet providers in Germany, was founded by Ralph Dommermuth, a native resident of Montabaur. The headquarters of the corporation are still based in his home town.
The first evidence of the existence of Montabaur dates to 959, when it was called "castellum Humbacense" - German: Humbach. Because of the resemblance of the approximately 1000 ft. high mountain to Mount Tabor in Israel, a returning crusader, the Archbishop of Trier "Dietrich von Wied", named the place Mons Tabor. The name eventually evolved to the current usage of "Montabaur." In 1291, the village became a city with its own coat of arms and a city wall.
Montabaur is also the seat of the Verbandsgemeinde ("collective municipality") Montabaur, which consists of the following Ortsgemeinden ("municipalities"):
