[edit] Academics
Monterey Highlands School is one of the top-performing elementary schools in the Alhambra Unified School District. The API score for 2006 grew thirty four points from 817 to 851, giving Highlands the third-highest API score, behind Ynez and Brightwood elementary schools.
[edit] Student Body
Monterey Highlands School serves a diverse body of students from the Highlands and Downtown areas of Monterey Park. The population is broken down to about 64% Asian, 31% Hispanic, 4% Caucasian, and 1% African American.
Students at Highlands strive to out-perform and out-smart their cross-hill rival Brightwood School. Both of them are well known for their outstanding cross country and track teams, due to the combination of a rigorous training program, active lifestyle, and high altitude.
[edit] School uniforms
Students in grades Kindergarten through 8 are required to wear school uniforms [1].
The policy, which applied to the Alhambra School District, began in September 1996. The policy remained after the consolidation of ASD and AHSD, with the policy applying to all Kindergarten through 8th grade students.
