Monk is the originator of Boulder Free Radio, known as KBFR in Boulder, Colorado. KBFR is one of the most technically advanced Pirate Radio Stations in the US using Internet Studio Transmitter Links, mobile vans and multiple transmitters to keep the FCC at bay. KBFR has been on the air since March of 2000 and consists of about 2 dozen members (calling themselves BURG for Boulder Underground Radio Group). The people regularly change out for new members making it a true coop without a 'head' making it very difficult for the FCC to determine who to go after. The group owns the equipment (keeping it in several locations around Boulder) and uses multiple antenna sites to keep the location of the station (and the van, which is used as a mobile studio) secret from broadcast to broadcast.
On Jan. 11th, 2005, the FCC successfully shut down KBFR. It did this by visiting an alleged KBFR DJ's workplace telling his boss he was 'involved in illegal activity'. They also left a "Letter of Apparent Liability" at this alleged DJ's home (which was in no way connected to any KBFR activity.. clearly against all FCC rules). And, by accusing an ex-roommate of Monks of being involved (forcing the ex roommate to hire a lawyer to protect himself). The group decided that if the FCC was willing to break laws and raise the level of harrassment to this level, it was time to quit.
