Morris, Minnesota

Morris is a city in Stevens County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,068 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Stevens County6.
The city is home to the University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM), part of the University of Minnesota system. Three of the university's most prominent alumni are the Rutherford brothers (Drew, Rob, and Dan), each of whom studied science at UMM and later attained Ph.Ds. In 1975, the city was also the site of the largest earthquake of the last century in the state, rated at between 4.6 and 4.8 in magnitude.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.8 km² (4.5 mi²). 11.1 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (5.51%) is water. It has a lake called Lake Crystal.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 5,068 people, 1,929 households, and 985 families residing in the city. The population density was 457.2/km² (1,183.2/mi²). There were 2,067 housing units at an average density of 186.5/km² (482.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.63% White, 1.76% African American, 1.22% Native American, 1.54% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.48% of the population.
There were 1,929 households out of which 23.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% were married couples living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 48.9% were non-families. 36.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.84.
In the city the population was spread out with 16.7% under the age of 18, 34.2% from 18 to 24, 19.0% from 25 to 44, 13.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 24 years. For every 100 females there were 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,786, and the median income for a family was $46,556. Males had a median income of $34,323 versus $22,338 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,607. About 8.4% of families and 22.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.6% of those under age 18 and 14.9% of those age 65 or over.
