Applied to certain consonants having a palatalized, "liquid" or softened sound.
Examples:
- French, "l" or "ll" and "gn" (like the "lli" in million and "ni" in minion)
- Italian, "gl" and "gn"
- Spanish, "ll" and "ñ"
- Portuguese, "lh" and "nh"
