Mount Carmel is a town located in Hawkins County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,795.

Mount Carmel is located at 36°33′56″N, 82°39′12″W (36.565666, -82.653265)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 17.7 km² (6.8 mi²). 17.7 km² (6.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.15% is water.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 4,795 people, 1,935 households, and 1,499 families residing in the town. The population density was 270.7/km² (701.5/mi²). There were 2,078 housing units at an average density of 117.3/km² (304.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.27% White, 0.54% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population.

There were 1,935 households out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.1% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% were non-families. 20.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.84.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $36,599, and the median income for a family was $43,604. Males had a median income of $34,844 versus $24,340 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,702. About 5.5% of families and 9.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.0% of those under age 18 and 16.8% of those age 65 or over.

One "claim to fame" for Mt. Carmel is that is was once recognized as the only town in the US to be totally on one side of the road. Since then, they city has secured property on the other side of the road, and has built a cemetery, but that's all as of yet.
