Mountain State University [MSU], in spite of the name, is an independent, nonsectarian, coeducational, not-for-profit university based in Beckley, West Virginia. It was founded in 1933 as Beckley College, a junior college, and continued as such until 1991, when it achieved four-year status and was renamed The College of West Virginia. In 2001 the school was renamed Mountain State University. The university offers more than 40 undergraduate and master's degree programs, most of which focus on professional fields in business, technology, health, and human services. The university will soon offer a Ph.D. in Executive Leadership for qualifying individuals.
Resources on the Beckley campus include a library with more than 95,500 volumes, a 192-bed residence hall, a student union, international student services, tutoring center, and a medical facility. The university also provides selected degree programs and courses through its branch campuses in Martinsburg, West Virginia; Center Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania; and Orlando, Florida and at educational sites throughout West Virginia. Many additional students worldwide attend through online and distance learning programs.
MSU utilizes WebCt to deliver on-line courses that include required live on-line chats, testing, and team assignments. Students must be highly motivated to participate in the on-line degree program(s) due to the large amount of reading and the number of assignments. Course curriculum follows the in-seat class curriculum. Course facilitators for the masters program are required to have a Ph.D. Successful completion of the masters program requires a research paper utilizing concepts learned in the program.
MSU continues to grow and is on the fast track to becoming one of the top-tier private universities due in part to the highly successful distance learning degree programs. The university has been a pioneer in the study of applied Leadership Theory and other applied sciences. MSU is now used in the Fort Worth, Texas, Police and Fire Academy delivering on-line and in-seat instruction. In police departments, fire departments, and large corporations across the country, many students have enhanced their careers through the achievement of higher degrees through the university. The university has structured degree plans for individuals in private business, public service, and for personnel in the U.S. military.
