Mountain View High School (Mountain View, California)

Mountain View High School (MVHS or just MV), one of two Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District public high schools, is located in Mountain View, California. The school sent 92% of its of graduates to post-secondary schools in the graduating class of 2005. Newsweek ranked Mountain View High School as the 258th best high school in the nation in 2005. [1] The school colors are gold and black and the mascot is the Spartan. The student newspaper is called The Oracle.

Before 1982 the school was named Chester F Awalt High School. When the district closed the original Mountain View High School (in downtown Mountain View), it renamed Awalt High as Mountain View High, since it was now the only district high school in Mountain View (being located on the border between Mountain View and Los Altos). Awalt's original library, dating from 1961, was turned into classrooms in 2001, and a new multi-million dollar library was constructed on a different part of the Mountain View campus. Most of the materials from the old library were transferred to the new library.

As of November 2005, the enrollment at Mountain View High School was 1,789. During the 2005-2006 school year, 52% Caucasian, 17% Hispanic, 19% Asian, 3% Filipino, 4% African American, 1% Pacific Islander, 3% multi-racial, and other.

Mountain View High School has the highest possible Academic Performance Index; this is the Californian system for measuring school proficiency. Each year, the school produces several National Merit Scholars. 70% of MVHS students passed their AP exams last year. The classroom student:teacher ratio is 29:1, and there are 95 certified teachers, of which 56% hold advanced degrees. Newsweek ranked Mountain View High School as the 258th best high school in the nation in 2005.
