Mr. Saturn (どせいさん Dosei-san?) is a fictional species that first appeared in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System game EarthBound. They are friendly to the player's party, and help the player defeat the monster Master Belch. All individuals of the species are named Mr. Saturn, except for the friendly Dr. Saturn who will recover all negative status effects for free. They are identical in appearance, each short, pink, with an overlarge nose, whiskers, and a bow on its one hair, somewhat resembling a blobfish. They speak broken English, and erratically use the words "boing," "ding," and "zoom" in their speech for unknown reasons, a single common expression being "KAY-O, BOING!". Also, in-game, the text that appears in the Mr. Saturn text windows is a different font than any other in the game, which can be difficult to read at first. The Japanese font is said to be inspired by the handwriting of the young daughter of EarthBound's designer, Shigesato Itoi. They make a return appearance in Mother 3, the sequel to EarthBound. In both games, they help with repairing or building various machines, though it's never shown exactly how a creature with no hands is able to do this.
Mr. Saturns make their home in Saturn Valley, in Eagleland. Their village has round homes which resemble flying saucers and/or the planet Saturn and strange furniture, such as ATMs which bounce up and down in place and resemble Mr. Saturns. Saturn Valley also contains a free hot spring, which will restore all your health and revive fallen party members, and a coffee break that recaps your journey. Some of the Mr. Saturn's preferred foods are "almond monaka" and "pig yōkan" (changed to "peanut cheese bars" and "piggy jelly" in the English version of the game), goods that can be purchased in the Saturn Valley shop.
They also play a role in Mother 3, where Lucas and his friends must rescue them from the Pig Masks. In return, they help the group fly away. Their home, "Dosei Dani" ("Dosei" means "Saturn" and "dani" comes from "tani" which means "valley"), is not the same as "Saturn Valley" in Mother 2.
[edit] Cameos
Mr. Saturn makes a cameo appearance in Kirby Super Star as one of the treasures in the Great Cave Offensive. Obtaining Mr. Saturn as a treasure yields 120,000G towards the player's score.
[edit] Super Smash Bros Series
Mr. Saturn also appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a trophy and an object on the battlefield. On the battlefield, it will walk about until a character picks it up, or until it disappears due to inactivity. Mr. Saturn may also be used as a projectile weapon. Mr. Saturn will not disappear instantly after being thrown, and will remain on the stage for a little longer. If Mr. Saturn hits character, a small squeaking noise can sometimes be heard. When walking, Mr. Saturn will slowly push items around the field, sometimes off the stage's cliffs. When thrown, there is a possibility he will break a shield. There are four bonuses related to Mr. Saturn: "Saturn Fan" if he is the only item used for that battle; "Saturn Siblings" if three or more different Mr. Saturns are used; "Saturn Ringer" if the player catches a Mr. Saturn thrown at them; and "Mrs. Saturn" if a player holds a Mr. Saturn for 30 seconds at one time. A player can also pull a Mr. Saturn from the ground on a rare occasion when playing as Princess Peach by using her Down and B attack (they can also pull other items, such as a beam sword or a sickly looking turnip that does extra damage).
