The Museum of the American West, or the Autry National Center, is a western heritage museum located in Griffith Park in Los Angeles, California. The museum was founded by actor and singer Gene Autry in 1988 and was originally known as the Autry Museum of Western Heritage. Upon founding the museum, Autry stated he wished to create:
“ | a museum which would exhibit and interpret the heritage of the west, and show how it has influenced America and the world. | ” |
In January 2004, the Museum of the American West merged with the Southwest Museum of the American Indian to form the Autry National Center. The museums coordinate their exhibitions and admissions and also includes the Institute for the Study of the American West.
