Muthappan temple

Sree Muthappan is the most popular local god in the Kannur District of north Kerala state, south India.
Muthappan is also the theyyam performed in the famous Parassinikkadavu temple 16 km north of Kannur town.
Other theyyams are seasonal (the season lasting October to May), but Muthappan theyyam is performed year round.
This temple is in the banks of Valapattam river.

[edit] The story of Muthappan
As a boy, Muthappan was rebellious. He was a great hunter and would skin the animals that he killed and wear their skins as clothes. One day, He came across a coconut tree that was being tapped for toddy, the Kerala liquor fermented from coconut sap. He climbed the tree and emptied the jar that was holding the toddy. When the toddy tapper returned and saw Muthappan, he immediately challenged him. Muthappan turned the man to stone for daring to address such a powerful god in this manner. During performances of Muthappan theyyam, the performer consumes the toddy liquor and passes it around to the spectators. Hence, Muthappan “breaks” the temple rules by allowing alcohol into temple grounds.

[edit] Main festivals of Parassinikkadavu Madappura
Every day Thiruvappana and Vellattam are performed in the early morning and in the evening.
Puthari Thiruvappana or "the first Thiruvappana of the year, puthari means the ceremonial feast from the new crop" is on Vrichikam 16th. The last Thiruvappana is on Kanni 30th every year.
Thiruvappana is not performed on the following days.
1. Thulam 1st to Vrischikam 15th every year.
2. Amaavasi day of Karkkitakam and Thulam.
3. "Nira" day of the temple.
4. When there is a death in Madappura family.

Offerings to Sree Muthappan by devoties are Paimkutty, Vellattam, Thiruvappana. You can ask for other offering details in the temple itself.
Offerings by Matayan are Vecheringat (a boiled mixture of banana, pepper, turmeric powder and salt.), Neerkari (mixture of raw rice powder, salt, turmeric powder and pepper) Boiled gram, coconut slices. Toddy and burnt dry fish are also used as offerings.

- Nearest railway station : Kannur, about 16 km
- Nearest airport : Karipur International Airport, Kozhikode about 110 km from Kannur.
- A person from abroad can reach Parassanikadavu by landing at Mangalore or Karipur airport and then by road or rail. From Manglore travel about 150 km through NH 17 towards south via Dharmashala to Parassanikadavu which is 4 km away from Dharmashala, similarly from karipur travel about 110 km towards north through NH 17 via Dharmshala to Parasinikadavu.
- Frequent bus service are available throughout the day from municipal bus stand Kannur. Also can take a taxi.
