myGamma is an international mobile networking community with paid membership. It is a social networking service where users interact with each other through instant messaging, sharing of photos, participating in user-generated groups and play online role-playing games, among others.

myGamma is currently available to paying members in Australia, Brunei, China, Egypt, Ecuador, France, India, Ireland, Indonesia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Morocco, Romania, Singapore, Thailand, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States (Jan 2007).

Like most social networking services, myGamma is aimed at young adults worldwide, providing members avenues to interact, broaden their social circles and maintain their mobility. Unlike most such services which are primarily web-based, myGamma users predominantly access the service on their phone. Members are charged on their mobile phone bills.

myGamma is run by BuzzCity Private Limited, a Singapore-based company. According to the site http://www.buzzcity.com, the company is venture funded by investors including 3i and Singapore Press Holdings, a media conglomerate in the city-state.

myGamma has adapted popular web applications for the mobile phone. Members create an online identity by filling up a user profile. Members can start mobile blogs, start groups, set up calendars of events, create a photo album, define their friends’ list by choosing from existing members or by inviting new members to join. Those who are online chat via an instant messaging interface while messages posted to non-online members are routed to their inboxes to await a response.

myGamma has recently introduced an e-mail function to its suite of services. This new addition, also called C-Mail (for cell mail), allows myGamma members to send & receive e-mails to and from their WAP phones. All members will now have a mygamma.com email address that remains permanent even when members change their phone numbers. Unlike email, c-mail is developed specifically for the mobile phone. Mobile-compatible attachments like MP3, video, and photos can be emailed directly from a PC to c-mail, enabling the recipient to easily save these onto their phones.

Members can set up their own WAP sites with their own unique URL based on the mygamma domain. Eg. http://wapguru.mygamma.com. Enterprising and creative members are able set up a Store on their wap site where they upload and sell or give free the wallpapers and ringtones they have created.

A popular feature of the myGamma community is Gamma Life!, a game based on the concept of online role-playing games (MMORPG). In Gamma Life!, members “gift” one another with virtual items bought with G$ that will enable them to move up the Gamma Life! ladder. Those who make it to the higher levels receive perks and privileges.

myGamma provides a unified platform for content owners, service providers and other merchants to sell their mobile merchandise. Since myGamma has billing capabilities in 18 countries (Jan 2007) via the mobile phone, this platform enables merchants to sell to users in these markets via the Gamma Dollar or G$. G$ is a virtual currency which users pay for with real money and then use it to buy mobile goods, services and Gamma Life items.

To kickstart the local community in new countries myGamma enters, it will first offer a free service for a limited period before charging. The service is currently free in Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Paraguay, Philippines, Russia, Serbia, Sudan, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Venezuela and Vietnam.

myGamma is also accessible on the web at http://www.mygamma.com, although 95% of myGamma members access the service through their mobile phone on http://wap.mygamma.com. The service appears to be more popular in countries where mobile phone penetration is higher than PC Internet penetration.
