[edit] Series Pre-Release Information
The Mystic Arcana series was announced at the 2007 New York Comic Convention in New York City at the Marvel Comics "Cup 'O Joe" panel, headed by Marvel editor-in-chief, Joe Quesada. The event will be under the creative control of Tarot artist David Sexton. [1]
Marvel.com reporter Jim Beard reports that the Mystic Arcana will be in the same "vein of the wild and woolly genre revitalization Annihilation." [2] Beard interviewed Mystic Arcana's editor Mark Paniccia who explained:
What makes [Mystic Arcana] unique is the fact that we're not only focusing on Marvel's magical characters, but also the realm in which they operate, much like ANNHILATION did with the cosmic characters. We're exploring and revealing things about magical objects and heroes that expand and enhance Marvel's already extant magic community.[3]
Beard explains the structure of the story in the same interview. Each individual issue of Mystic Arcana will contain a 22-page main story, and a 10-page back-up story. The 22-page stories will revolve around 1 of 4 "mystical implements" (which Beard describes as "pillars of the [Marvel] universe") with an additional focus on one of the four magicians featured in the Mystic Arcana series. The 10-page stories will focus on what Beard calls "the spine of Mystic Arcana": the quest of Dr. Strange adversary Ian McNee to collect all of the featured implements. Series editor Mark Paniccia promises that "by series end, we'll have two very powerful sorcerers in the Marvel Universe."[4] Additionally, Mystic Arcana's creative director David Sexton explains in a Newsarama interview that the "series is called Mystic Arcana...because the Minor Arcana of the Tarot will serve as a unifying element to the stories. And we are all working hard to, through this series, establish the status quo and ground rules for Magic in the Marvel Universe." He cites Magik as the representative of the Tarot minor arcana suit of swords, Black Knight for pentacles, Scarlet Witch for cups, and Nico Minoru for wands. [5]
