Nador
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nador city (Amazigh:Nnadur ), northeastern Morocco in the Rif. The city is a Mediterranean port on the Bhar Amezzyan (Mar Chica) Lagoon and a trading centre for fish, fruits, and livestock. It is linked to the Spanish plaza (North African enclave) of Melilla, 10 kilometers north, by a semi-motorway. The city is populated by Tarifit-Berber (Thamazight n Arif) speaking population of nearly 180,000 inhabitants. The current governor of Nador province is Mr. Abdellah Bendhiba. He was appointed by the king Mohammed the 6th.
Near Nador there is the transmission site for long-wave and shortwave of Medi 1 Radio. The aerial masts of Medi 1 Radio for long-wave are approximately 380 metres high and belong to the tallest constructions in Afrique.
The economy of the city is based on three resources:
- The smuggling of tax-free goods from the Spanish city of Melilla (called Mritch by Local Nadorians) to Morocco.
- The money transfers of Riffian Moroccans who are working in Western Europe.
- The Drug smuggling trade to Europe which is now weakening because of the European pressure on Rabat.
There are other less strong economic activities in Nador city and the province of Nador like fishery, agriculture, some industry (metallurgy for instance), and also good smuggling from Algeria - along the roads of Nador and its surroundings you can find several spots for illegal sale of cheaper gasoline or diesel coming from Algeria.
The people of Nador believe that the central government in Rabat has abandoned them for 4 decades and took care only of the Arabophone areas of Morocco (Rabat, Fez...), however Nador is considered as the 2nd richest city in Morocco (after Casablanca) on the level of financial capacity (Money transfers of Nadori Moroccans living and working in Western Europe)
