This is a proposal to agree a standard naming convention for railway stations in the United Kingdom. Naming conventions for stations elsewhere in the world are at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (stations).
This convention is still under debate, please see Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (UK stations).
The following table is an extension of the agreed standard for London at Wikipedia:WikiProject London#Naming conventions:

* There is no consensus that all tram stops are automatically notable enough for their own article.
[edit] Official names
The official name of the station should normally be used with the appropriate suffix, except where this would be ambiguous.
If there is any doubt about what the official name is, the name given on the station platforms should be used.
The last official name should be used for closed stations. Where this is now in use elsewhere the closed station should take the disambiguation.
[edit] Redirects
In most cases redirects from one form to another are recommended (e.g. Bristol Temple Meads station → Bristol Temple Meads railway station, Nottingham railway station → Nottingham station).
Redirects from non-ambiguous former and alternate names are appropriate, (e.g. Nottingham Midland station → Nottingham station).
[edit] Disambiguation
Where there is more than one station in a town/city x station etc should normally be a disambiguation between them (e.g. Bristol station should disambiguate between Bristol Temple Meads railway station and Bristol Parkway railway station, and optionally smaller stations in Bristol that don't have Bristol in their name).
Exceptions:
- Where one station is clearly more important than the other(s)
- Where the official name of one station has no more specific name (e.g. Reading railway station and Reading West railway station)
Disambiguation between different stations with the same name is recommended e.g.
- Monument station disambiguates Monument Metro station and Monument tube station
- Victoria station disambiguates the stations in London, Manchester, Sheffield and Southend, as well as the London coach station, a station on the Montreal Metro and a restaurant chain.

- All London Underground and DLR stations use this convention.
- Most, but not all, mainline railway stations already conform to this standard.
- There is no apparent standard in use for Tyne and Wear Metro stations.
