Listed at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion for renaming. Shouldn't this category be called People from Birmingham? The issues are as follows: -
- The description states it includes "both people who were born in Birmingham, and those who were raised and naturalised in this city". Native tends to mean born in. One cannot be naturalised in a city - unless that city is a city state with its own national government - as naturalisation is a legal process.
- There is no category for those people (James Watt, John Henry Newman and David Lodge for example) who only arrived in Birmingham as adults but have strong associations with the city.
- Conversely, people whose only connection with Birmingham is getting born here and who may not even have spent their childhoods in Birmingham (Tony Hancock comes to mind) can be placed here legitimately.
- Creating a separate category People from Birmingham whilst leaving Natives of Birmingham in place creates unnecessary duplication of category. Creating a category People associated with Birmingham who arrived there first as adults is, well, silly.
- People from Foo appears to be the standard format for listing people linked to a city - e.g. Category:People from New York City - Valiantis 21:18, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

- On the basis that the proposed renaming proposal is not to be enacted, I have removed the comment in the category page that the category includes people not born in Birmingham but "raised and naturalised" in the city for the reasons outlined above. All those currently in the category are people born in Birmingham (according to their WP articles). Valiantis 13:40, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

i agree with User:Valiantis that a People from Birmingham cat is in order. Category:Londoners allows for those raised in the city and those resident of the city to be listed. a list for natives or people born in a city provides too trivial information. i m aware that some vote was held to keep this name but i think the trouble goes further - all Natives of cats for county should be done away with in favour of people from county cats. -Mayumashu 06:38, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- right, the point raised in the discussion for not changing the name is valid - "people from" suggests nativeness somewhat. perhaps an even better name that allows for vagueness in name to overcome restrictiveness is "Birmingham people" - its too bad there wasn t a common term like "liverpudlian" for birmingham that wasn t too colloquial -Mayumashu 06:43, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Why not Brummies?
For consistency, I believe this category should be called Brummies. This would be in keeping with other categories such as Liverpudlians, Mancunians and Plymothians. Brummies is a widely used term for people from Birmingham. Jameboy 22:49, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
