National Youth Orchestra

The National Youth Orchestra (full name National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain; abbreviation NYO) is a symphony orchestra drawn from the best British teenage instrumentalists and composers. It was founded in 1947 by Ruth Railton (later Dame Ruth King). Players are selected by audition, and assemble during school holidays for rehearsal and study under a guest conductor. The orchestra gives several concerts a year around the country, commissions new works, and also involves other musicians such as student composers. The current director of the NYO is Jonathan Vaughan and its chairman is Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger.
