Nawa-i-Waqt (Urdu: روزنامہ نواے وقت) is a Urdu daily newspaper in Pakistan. Nawa-i-Waqt started its publishing on 23rd March 1947 under the leadership of Hameed Nizami. The tradition is continued by Majeed Nizami. Until 1990, Nawa-i-Waqt was the newspaper with the largest circulation in the country. It is well-respected for its democratic stances during the long military dictatorships in the country's history.
During its entire publishing history, various governments have oppressed the newspaper one way or another, which the newspaper considers proof of its own impartiality and fearlessness to speak truth to power. Widely regarded as Pro-Pakistan newspaper, it is struggling nowadays against current military regime as well as newer trends in Pakistani journalism.
Among the more famous writers for Nawa-i-Waqt was the late Dr. Muhammad Baqir, professor emeritus at Punjab University (Lahore), a noted linguist, journalist, historian, novelist, poet, and social commentator. During his heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, Baqir's columns were considered required reading in Pakistan and were frequently the object of conversation - both derisive and laudatory - among Pakistan's educated elite.
