Neguac, New Brunswick

Neguac is a village on Miramichi Bay in north-eastern New Brunswick, Canada, at the southern end of the Acadian Peninsula and 44 kilometres northeast of Miramichi. As of 2001, the population was 1,697, of which 92% are francophone.
Neguac calls itself the "Savoie Capital of Canada", as most Acadians with that surname trace their ancestry to the Neguac area. The first settlers in the village, Jean Savoie and his family, arrived in the area in 1757, two years after the Expulsion of the Acadians. Neguac was incorporated in 1967. In 2007, the community celebrates its 250th anniversary and 40th anniversary of incorporation.
The local economy is based on fishing and forestry, of which oyster harvesting and lobster fishing are the main stays. The community has two wharves situated in its municipal limits. However, the community is a service centre of the Miramichi Bay area offering government services, restaurants, gas stations and other retail stores and services. It has a large fish plant processing lobster and herring. A call centre was recently opened a few years ago and employs some fifty call centre representatives. Its famous oysters are distributed throughout the world via the Maison Beausoleil Company. Neguac is considered the Oyster Hub of Atlantic Canada.
