Nelspoort, Western Cape
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nelspoort is a town located in Beaufort West Municipality, Western Cape.
In the absence of anything else, here are some personal recollections ...
In the 1970's, Nelspoort was predominantly a hospital complex for "non-white" tuberculosis and mental patients. There was a railway station, a small electricity generator plant, a farm which supplied the complex with milk and mutton, and a two roomed school for the "white" children. There were rock painting in the bush nearby and a cave called "Kitchener's Well" which, by local reputation at least, was where Lord Kitchener hid during the Boer War. The paintings have apparently become established tourist attractions. The two tennis courts (surface sealed with molasses - popular with us children!), swimming pool ( mind the frogs ) and Friday-night cinema in the hall (hang on while I change reels.. ) made it a social center for neighboring farms.
