Neutrino telecommunications

A neutrino laser is a theoretical technology.
Luca Gamberale and Flavio Fontana at the Pirelli Labs in Milan are working with sapphire crystals as possible neutrino detectors. Their research is based off twenty year old experiments from University of Maryland physicist Joseph Weber, which was in turn brought to Fontana by University of Milan theoretical physicist Giuliano Preparata. Weber's discovery meant that certain ultra-stiff crystals would be far more effective as neutrino detectors than other known materials. In theory, they could even be used to generate a neutrino laser.
Because neutrinos barely interact with matter at all, they would lose very little power as part of a laser, making it possible to send a beam anywhere on earth without having to strengthen the signal. The signals from neutrino telecommunications could be sent in any direction, even through the centre of the earth. Both the sender and the receiver could be placed safely underground. If realized, the need for communication satellites and cables could be greatly diminished.
