Not being a sports fan, I looked up "spot" and "spotted" in Merriam-Webster on line. I doubt that the football is adorned with spots like a giraffe or hyena, and I likewise doubt that the word means "espied" but it must be some kind of trade lingo that should be explained or replaced with a word identifiable to all English-speaking people. I don't know why I keep running into this but evidently since last January nobody fixed it, so I did my best. Else it is meaningless to anybody but a sports fan - I do not know how I figured out the usage and I am still not sure on details (does "spotted" mean on the 50 yd line, or if not, where?). Normally, "is spotted on" means "is discerned (to be) on." Non-American-English speakers and those who are novices at sports or sports-watching would be clueless.
