[edit] The sight of blood
If you cringe at it, be sure to stay out of a delivery room. This photo may be gory, but it shows the REAL scene: the purple/blueish skin, the layer of white goop and the gobs of blood everywhere. If you wanna see true gore, see my shot for placenta!
So often in the media you'll see OLD babies cast as newborns. The current Star Wars movie has babies I'd estimate at about six weeks playing newborns. And they look as if they've been newly bathed and powdered! Even with the midwife 'droid we used for my wife's delivery, babies coming out of the womb are VERY strange looking.

- Actually, babies born in birth pools in low lighting are magnificent to watch as they look around with hardly a squawk. Babies born in non-medical or low intervention settings are generally put onto the mother's bare bosom for skin-to-skin reunion upon birth, with very little screaming. Until we change the imagery of what we consider 'normal' we cannot create gentle births for our families, and we will repeat medical dramas of primal proportions, like the one in this picture. This photo, sadly, is the norm of adult-centered rather than newborn-centered birth ritual, regardless of the good intentions of all involved. Yes, newborns are often slippery and tinted with pink and red... and the movies, as well as medical protocols, rarely allow for the earthy sensuality of birth. KellyPhD
