New Prog or Nu Prog, not to be confused with neo-prog, is a term used to describe a number of recent indie bands who incorporate elements from progressive rock. Bands described as "New Prog" include Pure Reason Revolution[1][2][3], Mew [4], Muse[5][6], The Cooper Temple Clause, Oceansize, Amplifier, The Fall of Troy, Secret Machines, dredg, Coheed and Cambria [7], The Negatones, The Fiery Furnaces, Blackfield[citation needed], Codeseven[citation needed] and The Mars Volta. Radiohead is sometimes included.[citation needed]
Key albums include:
- Muse: Origin of Symmetry, Absolution, Black Holes and Revelations
- Secret Machines: Now Here Is Nowhere[citation needed]
- Blackfield: Blackfield I, Blackfield II[citation needed]
- The Mars Volta: De-Loused in the Comatorium, Frances the Mute
The term in this sense is relatively new and other labels have been suggested [8] or used [1]. "New prog" has connections and overlap with the post-rock movement, but is distinct from the much earlier genre of neo-prog.
