The New South Wales Premier League (which, for sponsorship reasons, is known as the Vodafone Premier League) is the highest State level men's football (soccer) division in New South Wales, Australia. Nationally, it is one grade lower than the A-League. The competition is conducted by Football NSW, the State organising body. Despite being at the same level nationally, the NSWPL is often regarded as being of lesser quality to that of the VPL.
The restructure for 2006 changed from having 12 teams to 10. Some criticisms have been made of the teams chosen to compete in the competition, one of which argues that the competition is too Sydney-centric. St George Saints and Bonnyrigg White Eagles launched legal action against Football NSW, but were both unsuccessful in gaining admission to the competition.
The 2006 grand final was shown on Fox Sports, the first time that the final was be shown live on Australian television [1].
In 2008 there will be a shake-up of the New South Wales men's, women's and youth competitions. There will be a restructuring of the youth teams so they are aligned with their Senior Clubs. There will be also a restructuring of the men's senior competitions including new teams added to the NSW Premier League and a new promotion/relegation system.
