The New York Titans are a professional lacrosse team in the National Lacrosse League that began playing in the 2007 season.
The NLL announced on July 11, 2006 that New York City would be granted an expansion franchise. They will play four of their eight home games at Madison Square Garden, and the other four at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The principal owner is Gary Rosenbach, founder of Galleon Group. The ownership group also includes William E. Ford, Mark H. Ford, Nick Leone, Flip Huffard and Richard Ullmann[1].
The team has announced that Adam Mueller will be the head coach and interim general manager[2]. Mueller was previously the head coach of the Minnesota Swarm.
On August 14, 2006 the NLL announced that that Deputy Commissioner & General Counsel George Daniel resigned from his position with the league and has been hired as Team President and Governor of the league’s expansion New York City franchise[3].
This expansion franchise is not to be confused with the New York Saints who played first as the New Jersey Saints at Brendan Byrne Arena in The Meadowlands from 1987-1988, and then at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island from 1989-2003. The Saints franchise is technically still in existence and listed by the league as inactive.
Prior to being the name of a lacrosse team, the New York Titans was the original name of the New York Jets.
The Titans played their first game on January 6, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois against the Shamrox. Gewas Schindler opened the scoring 1:20 in, scoring the first goal in Titans history, but the Shamrox won the game 15-12[4]. The Titans' first win came in their third game, and first ever at home, when they defeated the Shamrox 11-9.
