Newfoundland and Labrador Highway 1

Route 1 is part of the Canadian Trans-Canada Highway system in Newfoundland, with the "official" mile zero at city hall in St. John's and continuing on to Channel-Port aux Basques where it is continued via the ferry transportation to North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The highway is commonly referred to as the TCH and is approximately 903 kilometres (561 miles) in length from ferry terminal at Channel-Port aux Basques to St. John's city hall.

[edit] St. John's to Whitbourne

Route 1 is a continuation of White Hills Road in the southeast end of St. John's, which begins off The Boulevard (Quidi Vidi Lake). The "outer ring" section of the highway traverses the northern bounds of the city until the intersection with Kenmount Road. From here the route proceeds in a general southerly direction for 49 km (30 miles) on a four lane divided highway to the Holyrood access road, Route 62. From the Holyrood access road the highway proceeds in a general westerly direction for 26 kilometres on a four lane divided highway to Whitbourne where the four lane divided highway ends.

Most residents, however, have adopted the official Trans-Canada Highway marker for mile zero, outside St. John's city hall, located next to Mile One Centre where it gets its name, for the beginning of the TCH. The route starts in an urban area, proceeding in a general westerly direction for 1 km from City Hall to Pitts Memorial Drive (actually Route 2). The 5 km (3 mile) route from Pitts Memorial Drive to the cloverleaf intersection with the TCH is on 4-lane divided highway in a general westerly direction. Note that none of the foregoing roads are officially considered part of Route 1.

[edit] Whitbourne to Clarenville

Route 1 continues in a general Northwest direction from Whitbourne towards the Isthmus of Avalon before it reaches the main island portion of the province. As you leave Whitbourne heading west Route 100 with access to Placentia and then onto Argentia and the Argentia ferry is avaialable. The highway continues in a general Northwest direction to an intersection for Route 201 and Route 202 at Thornlea hills.
