Newington Mall
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Newington Mall was a shopping mall in Newington, New Hampshire, just north of Portsmouth, built in the 1970s. In 1983, upon completion of the nearby (and larger) Fox Run Mall (also known as the Mall at Fox Run), the dated Newington Mall suffered a decline, losing its stores to the newer mall and was unable to keep up. Anchor stores included the 85,000 sq.ft. J.M. Fields Department store that closed in the late 1970s and was replaced by Bradlees in 1983, The 95,000 sq.ft. Montgomery Ward that opened in 1973, the 38,000 sq.ft. J.M. Fields Foods that closed in the late 1970s and became Shaw's, and a local chain that became Maine-based Porteous around 1979. The mall had 70 stores including Cherry & Webb, Booksmith, Software Etc, KB Toys, Hallmark, Radio Shack, Friendly's, CVS, Papa Gino's and several others. Eventually, after the exodus of most of the mall's tenants, it was demolished in early 1995 and re-constructed into a "big box" center, known as The Crossings at Fox Run, complementing the Fox Run Mall as a major shopping destination, especially attractive to nearby Maine residents, wishing to take advantage of New Hampshire's lack of sales tax.
