Newport Free Grammar School, in Newport, Essex in the East of England was founded in 1588, by Joyce Frankland.[2] Despite its name, the school is now a mixed comprehensive school with a sixth form. It has previously existed in numerous forms, such as a boarding school and a grammar school, requiring prospective pupils to sit an 11-Plus exam to gain entry.[citation needed] The school achieved Specialist Language College status in July 2003 from DfES and has been a Language College since September 2003.[3] The school has six Houses, named after people and places that were signicficant in the founding of the school; Morden, Banstead, Trappes, Saxie, Cauis and Frankland.
Following Richard Priestley's retirement in 2006, Mr Sean O'Hagan was appointed the new Headmaster. Although the school has achieved language college status. The current Head Boy is Tom Howe and Head Girl Rachel Cooper[4]
