As for the ad hominem attacks, what would you call this?

And of course the word "jackass" linked to my user page. That was really uncalled for. Wikipedia is about sharing notable information and coming together, not name calling. EdwinHJ | Talk 01:15, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Yes, that would be an unequivocal and obvious example of an ad hominem attack. But one independent of a fair and reasonable discussion of the epistemological merits of the topic in question and outside the context of the Wikipedia altogether (for the most part). It was also posted in response to an unprovoked and largely gratuitous attack against the Totally Obvious namespace -- one that was finally justifed on a naked appeal to status and not the notability or want of notability of the issue at hand. If that's not contrary to the spirit of the Wikipedia, well then we should all just go back to the library and crack open an Encyclopedia Britannica.
