[edit] Spirituality
In many parts of southern Africa, the word ngozi refers to a vengeful ancestral spirit. Victims of murder, those who committed suicide, and those who were not afforded a conventional burial (such as those whose who have been declared dead but whose bodies are still missing) are examples of those regarded as likely candidates and are often remembered during an inexplicable spate of unfortunate events. The series unfortunate events, typically involving great losses such as car accidents, severe illness, sudden unemployment or divorce all occurring in quick succession, may induce speculation linking the suffering to unresolved issues with potentially vengeful ancestors. Speculation under such circumstances may prompt consultation with a specialist healer (such as a sangoma or a svikiro) to ascertain the cause of suffering and the remedial courses of action to be taken.
