Nickel Theatre

The Nickel Theatre was the first dedicated movie theatre in Newfoundland, and one of the first in North America. It's early success made a host of copycats arise, but the long-running discount price of 5 cents was able to keep competitors at bay, giving the theatre a very impressive run.

Located in the top floor of the Benevolent Irish Society (BIS) building at 48 Queen's Road in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Apparently, the 1000 chairs came from John Lake's furniture factory in Fortune, Newfoundland^{[citation needed]}.

• 1906: First showing of motion picture.
• July 1, 1907: First regular opening.

Proprietor/owner: J.P. Kiely. He was a former singer/performer who was happier with more secure income. He was one of the few survivors of the SS Florizel disaster.

• The namesake continues in St. John's as the Nickel Festival in St. John's, Newfoundland.
• The BIS building that contained the Nickel Theatre has been since converted into 3 very high-end condominiums.
