Nicolas Cardinal Cheong Jin-Suk (born December 7, 1931) is currently the Archbishop of Seoul. He was elevated to Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in the consistory of March 24, 2006 along with 14 others, being created and proclaimed Cardinal-Priest of Santa Maria Immacolata di Lourdes a Boccea.
He was educated in the Seoul National University. He then studied sociology in Hong Kong; Canon law in Rome and residing at Pontifical Urbaniana University during 1968-1970.
He was ordained as priest on March 18, 1961 in the archdiocese of Seoul. He became the curate of the parish of Saint Joseph in 1961; professor at the Minor Seminary and notary of the curia in 1962; undersecretary of the Catholic Conference in 1964-1965 and episcopal chancellor and vice-rector of the Minor Seminary in 1966-1967. He studied canon law in Rome from October 1968 until his promotion to the episcopate.
He was designated bishop of Ch'ongju on June 25, 1970. He was consecrated on October 3, 1970 in the church of the Holy Family in Ch'ongju. He was promoted to the metropolitan see of Seoul on May 29, 1998. On 6 May 2006 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him a member of the executive committee of the Pontifical Council for the Family .[1]
