Nigerian hip hop

Hip hop is a cultural movement composed of four parts: breakdancing, graffiti art, rapping and DJing. It spread to much of Africa, including Nigeria, in the 1980s. Breakdancing was particularly popular.

In the 1990s, the record company Payback Tyme Records and groups like SWAT ROOT (made up of Solo Dee, El-Dee, Mode Nine, Mista Baron, De Weez & 6 Foot Plus),The Trybesmen ("Trybal Marks", 1999) and Plantashun Boyz became a part of mainstream Nigerian music after the collapse of pop trends like Yo-pop. The availability of computers and cheap music editing software in the late 1990s and the 2000s enabled Nigerian musicians to achieve higher quality recordings which quickly won over the Nigerian audience. As Nigeria's Nollywood movies have done to Western movies, Nigerian hip hop has begun to displace Western popular music.

The African Beatz magazine, based in Nigeria, is a prominent African hip hop publication. Hip-Hop World and Bubbles magazines are other major Nigerian hip hop publications.

Ruggedman, an Igbo artist, is known for his hardcore lyrics, and has being doing shows around the world, including Dublin, Ireland, Ghana, and elsewhere. Bosalin, (aka Blaq Xoul) is another Nigerian Igbo Artiste that reps the Streets of Africa without losing out the Home touch Known as the Underground king Of AfroHipHop Other prominent artists include modenine, Olusegun Olugbadura Osaniyi (AKA Lord of Ajasa), 2face Idibia, Zdon Paporrella, Eedris Abdulkareem, 2Shotz, Amplifyd crew, Ruff, Rugged & Raw, OJBDbanj,Djinee,Dare

Additionally MADAROCKA "African Queen of Hip-Hop" [[1]] is a Nigerian born artist based in the US. She became the first female in Nigeria for Hip-Hop to be featured on Africa Independent Television in Nigeria. A poet indeed, focusing on empowerment for tomorrow's generation.
