[edit] Plot summary
Harry Kim takes command of a Kraylor ship carrying medical relief supplies when its crew is killed. He, Neelix, and Seven are on an away mission to find dilithium when they find themselves literally between two battling ships. They receive a distress call from the cloaked ship (only partially cloaked, however; the battle is taking its toll) and respond. Kim agrees to pilot the ship for them as far as Voyager, as the ship landed for a maintenance layover. They talk to Janeway when they arrive, after hiding from the Annari ships in orbit (Voyager is making trade arrangements). Janeway tries to give the command to someone else, but Harry persuasively argues in his own favor and is given the assignment.
Meanwhile, Icheb fixes a power drain in mere seconds, one which would have taken the Engineering crew hours to find. Janeway assigns Icheb to B'Elanna until the end of the layover. He and B'Elanna end up working together a lot. Icheb thinks Torres is coming on to him, and asks the Doctor for guidance. He scans Torres in a Jeffries tube and discovers all the physiological signs of attraction, which he misinterprets.
While Icheb is scanning his crewmates, Kim finds out that Loken, the leader of the "passengers" on the ship he is commanding (he named it the Nightingale for the supposed medical supply mission) is really a carrier of a prototype cloak for the Kraylor fleet. He learns the real circumstances of their world, and temporarily refuses to command. Seven helps him see his flaw and he decides to help just when they hit the sensor pods designed to illuminate cloaked ships. Harry has everyone but himself, Seven, and Terek (his Kraylor helmsman) evacuate to the surface as part of an agreement with an Annari commander. He then instructs Terek to reverse shield polarity to disrupt the Annari tractor beam. They effectively use the enemy's weapons against them and enter the planet's atmosphere, mission successful.
Icheb and B'Elanna reach an understanding back on Voyager, and after a brief period they readjust to their situation.
