No Direction are a four piece alt. rock band from Gibraltar. No Direction are one of a new wave of bands appearing from Gibraltar hoping to capitalise on the success of other bands from the area such as Breed 77 and Melon Diesel/Taxi. They are viewed as unique in Gibraltar due to their more "British" style of rock, citing influences such as Radiohead, Muse, Garbage, Placebo & Smashing Pumpkins, amongst others.
Formed in late 2004 by Lois Homewood (Vocals, Guitar) and Louis Soiza (Bass), No Direction originally were a 3 piece band with percussion coming by the way of a Bongo Player(Dominick O'Garr Who still makes appearances from time to time, either from bongo-only tracks or as part of the percussion section). Their intention was simply to play twice a month round local pubs their own particular style of music, as well as the odd popular cover song.
The Start of 2005 saw them become a more recognisable 4 piece band with the addition of Jackob Franke (Drums) and Chris Francis (Guitar). No Direction caught on in Gibraltar and Andalucia with their lyrically intense sound and alt.rock vibes, making them stand out from the norm at that time. Interest from Indie labels soon ensured, and the band entered into a contract with Indie label Melodrift[1]. Songs such as "Twisted Love Song" and "Psychotic Narcotics" achieved International success via the UK Songwriting Contest[2], where both songs reached the Final judging stages (Testimonals Here)[3]. At around the same time their debut 7 Track-EP This Way (That Way)"" was released and copied were requested from all around the world. Indeed, "Twisted Love Song" topped the Gibraltar music charts for over 5 months, only to be replaced by "Nelsons" for a further three. This upswing in recognition saw them play in Gibraltar's major venues as well as opening up the National Day fair in August 2005, infront of a packed out crowd. This was followed by TV performances on BASH-X as part of Gibraltar TV's open day.
2006 saw their gig's notoriety increase in local musical circles, with gig's being consistently packed out, including performances in Bash X and the One World Beat concert[4]. No Direction, as a band have had to endure many changes in 2006. Chris Francis left the band in April, and Lois is expecting a baby around October '06. Their last gig was at the Gibraltar Spring Festival.[5]
The band have not played any live gigs since April '06, but have been in rehearsal ever since with new Guitarist Stefan Williamson-Fa, a 16 year old guitarist touted by many in the local scene as one of Gibraltar's brightest guitarists. Rumour abounds regarding No-Directions return, but a December '06 looks likely, with the band publicly stating their first full album will be released in Spring 2007.
