[edit] Plot summary
In the 21st century, the penal system is now run by corporations, with prisoners as assets. Ex-soldier John Robbins is imprisoned for life for the murder of his superior officer, who had ordered Robbins to wrongfully bomb a civilian village. After two escapes from other maximum security prisons, he is now imprisoned in a facility run by the Warden. After the Warden reviews his file and meets him face to face, Robbins is thrown in a cell, where a fellow prisoner offers him food, and tells him about Absolom, a place which is more feared than the facility. Soon after the cellmate is to be punished for sharing food with Robbins, and the Warden demands that Robbins carries out the 'lashes' with a high voltage prod. When he refuses and the Warden threatens to kill the cellmate, Robbins takes the Warden hostage, but gives in. As punishment Robbins is taken to Absolom.
After being dropped off, Robbins is captured by the 'Outsiders', whom are led by Merak. When Robbins impresses them by killing an armed opponent in a duel, Merak offers Robbins a position within his gang, to which Robbins knocks Merak into a pool and steals the rocket launcher that Merak carries. After being pursued by the Outsiders and avoiding traps, Robbins is trapped at the edge of a cliff, and as he prepares to fire the rocket, he is shot in the neck with a dart and falls off. After being swept downriver, he is retrieved by another group, the 'Insiders'.
