Norton Street, Sydney
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Norton Street, Sydney is located in the suburb of Leichhardt, 5 km from the centre of Sydney. It was once a working class area populated primarily by first and second generation Italian migrants. These days, many of the original inhabitants have moved to outlying suburbs, and the area has gentrified. However, its Italian flavour remains, and Norton Street is its centrepiece.
Throughout Sydney it is known as "Little Italy". Thronged with eateries, most of them Italian, it's a place to eat, drink coffee, see a movie, and take part in the passegiata.
At one end of the street lis The Italian Forum, a piazza in the Roman style with a fountain, ringed by cafés and upmarket shops. Here you can buy real gelato, Venetian masks or Armani outfits, then head to the piazza for top notch coffee and pasta. There's plenty to do there.
At the other end you can find The Palace Cinema, bookshops and gourmet food shops boasting top quality olive oils, salamis, cheeses, antipasto and other Italian delicacies.
On important soccer days such as the World Cup, the street is closed and thousands of soccer fans line the streets ready to party [1]. It is also the centre of an annual festival called the Italian Fiesta, held in March/April.
You can reach Norton St by the 436, 437, 438 or 440 Sydney Buses via Parramatta Road, or by taking the Metro Light Rail to Lilyfield and walking about 10 minutes.
