Nottingham Elementary School, located in Arlington, Virginia, is a small school of about 430 students grades K through 5. Located in North Arlington near the McClean border, Nottingham, along with Jamestown, Taylor, and Tuckahoe, draws students from the northern border of Arlington County. All students within the Nottingham district go on to attend Williamsburg Middle School and Yorktown High School. Nottingham Elementary School also houses the Interlude Program for Arlington County's Elementary School system, which accounts for the high number of special needs students who attend the school from around the county and surrounding areas.
[edit] A Brief History
Completed in 1958, the original Nottingham Elementary School had two levels, the lower of the two being significantly smaller than the top. The School was originally built with a mid-sized room at the center to serve as a cafeteria, gymnasium, and auditorium. However, in the mid 1990s, construction began on a new gymnasium positioned at the west corner of the school. In 1997, construction on the new gymnasium finished.
As the population of Arlington County began to grow, it became evident that several public schools in the county would have to expand. Almost all public schools had (and several still do) numerous trailers being used as classrooms in the late 1990s and early 2000s. At Nottingham, the need to expand was so extreme that in 2004 the entire school (save the new gymnasium) was demolished to prepare for an entirely new school to house the growing number of students in the surrounding area.
During construction, the school was uninhabitable, and students were moved to a building in nearby Clarendon.
