HOW SEO STARTED SEO was founded in 1963 during the height of the modern Civil Rights Movement as a mentoring and college prep program for underprivileged high school students in New York City. The organization was based upon the conviction that all students can succeed when given access to opportunities. As more and more of SEO’s students went on to college, SEO recognized that there was a need to advocate for increased opportunities for minorities in the corporate workforce.
In 1980, the SEO Career Program was established to help high achieving students of color (Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, and Native American) reach their career goals by providing internships for minorities in some of our nation’s most challenging fields. Starting with Wall Street, the SEO Career Program began with 11 students placed at four investment banking firms. The Career Program now partners with more than 40 firms, offering over 400 career-blazing summer internships in seven areas. SEO partners with investment banks for the Accounting, Asset Management, Investment Banking and Information Technology programs. IBM, Xerox and EMC2 offer internships through the Global Corporate Financial Leadership program. Philanthropy interns learn about the grant-making process through internships with partner foundations. Corporate Law interns gain valuable work experience and training the summer before beginning law school and are eligible for the Judicial Clerkship program the following year.

OPENING DOORS TO SUCCESS [Sponsors for Educational Opportunity] is the nation’s premiere summer internship program for talented students of color leading to full-time job offers. Since its inception, SEO’s Career Program has placed over 4,500 Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, and Native American students in internships that lead to opportunities in exciting and rewarding careers in the most competitive industries worldwide. Our program is featured in Princeton Review’s 109 Best Internships in America, and is a gateway to the most coveted and highest paying careers. More than 80% of SEO interns receive job offers from partner firms after their internships. SEO grooms its interns to excel in the workplace and become leaders in their communities who will give back and forge a path to success for the next generation. As a direct result of the Career Program and the high performance of its interns, SEO has significantly increased the number of people of color employed on Wall Street and by major corporations nationwide.
WHAT SEO INTERNS RECEIVE SEO interns receive a comprehensive internship experience that goes far beyond simply placing students at companies for the summer. Interns gain exposure to CEOs and top executives of partner firms through the SEO Summer Seminar Series. We offer intensive training before and during the internship. Each intern is supported by an extensive mentoring program, and is welcomed into a powerful alumni network comprised of over 4,500 alumni in 43 states and 30 countries. Combined, these resources put our interns on the fastest track to some of the most financially rewarding career opportunities in the world. SEO Career Program interns have been turning their summer experiences into successful careers for 26 years.
ORIENTATION & TRAINING Interns from around the country participate in an orientation in New York City on Memorial Day Weekend to prepare them for their summer experience. They receive an overview of their summer work and responsibilities, as well as participate in workshops to enhance their professional skills. Before the summer begins, interns start training through our online Education Center, so they can walk into their internships ready to take on the job. Through our partnerships with Zoologic, a leader in web-based learning for financial professionals, interns work through modules on the Time Value of Money, Securities Markets, Equity Valuation, Corporate Finance, Analyzing Financial Statements, and the Fundamentals of Economic Indicators. Additional modules are tailored for those interns placed in Corporate Finance, Research, Asset Management, and Sales & Trading. Our partnership with Training the Street provides live instruction in financial modeling and valuation training. Both programs provide interns with the critical skills and knowledge necessary to perform at the highest levels in their internships. In addition, at the beginning of the summer, all interns participate in a comprehensive skills training program taught by high profile business professionals and renowned business school faculty. Courses are given in Financial Statement Analysis, Corporate Finance and Valuation, Basic and Intermediate Excel, and Corporate Culture and Etiquette. Sales & Trading interns have three additional days of training which introduce them to the financial markets, trading through the New York Stock Exchange, and bank trading simulations.
SEMINAR SERIES Our acclaimed Summer Seminar Series offers interns exposure to the highest levels of management. Partner firms host seminars and receptions allowing interns to meet CEOs, presidents, managing directors, senior managers, and recruiting officers.
FROM INTERNS TO EMPLOYEES Of course, the goal of the Career Program is to help our interns land highly competitive jobs. At the beginning of the summer, every intern’s resume is included in the SEO Resume Book that is distributed to all of our partner firms. SEO’s involvement continues through the End-of-Summer Workshop, where interns learn how to turn their internships into jobs through interview training, and workshops on how to handle multiple job offers. In addition, all interns have a chance to interview with representatives from each of our partner firms.
COMPENSATION The rewards of a career in one of SEO’s program areas begin during the summer internship. Interns make competitive weekly salaries, ranging from $600-$1,200/week, depending on the industry in which they are placed, which can lead to extremely well-paid careers once they are hired full-time.
MENTORING We want our interns to have the best possible experience during their internships so they will be the top hiring choice at their firm at the end of the summer. Integral to an intern’s success during the summer is the support network of mentors. Composed of an SEO alumnus who works at the intern's firm, a Street liaison and an SEO mentor, this network gives interns access to a cadre of people who have already succeeded in these highly competitive fields. Interns can speak with mentors about how to turn their internships into jobs, how to navigate through the industry, specific job challenges, career advice, and personal questions.

SEO Scholars Impact For 43 years, Sponsors for Educational Opportunity has been recruiting motivated students of color in NYC public high schools into the SEO Scholars Program to help them realize their full potential. With our targeted services, we are helping qualified public high school students to achieve the level of academic excellence that has earned them entry into and success at the best colleges in the nation.

SEO’s alumni, numbering more than 5,000, are at the core of a new generation of highly successful people of color. Programming for this unique group focuses on bringing professional development events to our alumni and other young professionals of color who are in various stages of their careers, while helping them build capacity for, and commitment to, strategic philanthropy.
