Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System is located in the Eastern Sahara and north-eastern Africa. It covers just over two million square kilometres, including north-west Sudan, north-eastern Chad, south-estern Libya, and most of Egypt. Containing roughly 150,000 cubic kilometres of groundwater (CEDARE 2000), its significance as a potential water resource for these countries cannot be overstated. Recently the Great Man-made River Project (GMR) started extracting water from this Aquifer on a large scale, removing 6.5 million cubic metres per day.
This system supplies the Al Khufrah Oasis.
