Jerry Lundegaard zit in financiële problemen. Uit pure wanhoop verzint hij het plan om zijn vrouw te laten ontvoeren, om zo zelf het losgeld van haar rijke vader te kunnen innen. De ontvoering loopt uit op een fiasco en leidt tot enkele moorden. De hoogzwangere agente Marge Gunderson moet de zaak onderzoeken.
