Maya Angelou eigenlijk Margueritte Johnson (Saint Louis, Missouri, 4 april 1928) is een Amerikaans schrijver en dichter.
Maya Angelou maakte naam met haar eerste roman I know why the caged bird sings, waarin ze de traumatische ervaringen van haar jeugd beschrijft. Deze bestseller werd verfilmd. Angelou laat in haar autobiografische romans een energieke, avontuurlijke (opgroeiende) Afrikaans-Amerikaanse vrouw zien die nergens voor terugdeinst. Haar boek Just give me a cool drink of water 'fore I die werd genomineerd voor de Pulitzer-prijs. Voor het audioboek A song flung up to heaven kreeg Angelou een Grammy in 2003.
In 1981 werd de veelzijdige Angelou hoogleraar amerikanistiek in Winston-Salem. Bij de inauguratie van president Clinton las zij een gedicht voor op zijn verzoek.
