Ocean Village (marina)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ocean Village is a marina, residential and leisure development on the River Itchen in Southampton, on the south coast of England. The residential development known as Admirals Quay on completion will house over 1,500 luxury apartments. Admirals Quay is set to become one of the main leisure areas in Southampton. The leisure facilities include two cinemas, cafes, trendy wine bars & restaurants including Banana Wharf and Pitcher and Piano.
A number of large companies, including HSBC, Barclays Bank and PricewaterhouseCoopers, have their regional headquarters at Ocean Village, which is also the base for the Royal Southampton Yacht Club. The Global Challenge yacht races started from here in 1992, 1996 and 2000.
Since 1988, the entrance to the marina has been the location for the former Calshot Spit lightship (LV 78), which now forms a permanent static attraction. This Trinity House navigation aid guided ships entering Southampton Water from the western end of the Solent, coming around the low lying sand and shingle Calshot Spit. It was built in 1914 by J I Thornycroft shipyard in Southampton, and decommissioned in 1978.
