Odex is a Singaporean company that licenses and releases anime for local and regional (South East Asian) consumption.

Odex currently releases predominantly in the Video Compact Disc (VCD) rather than DVD format due to its profitability in the region. Odex has previously released anime on DVD but stopped doing so due to low market demand (in the region), plus its use as the source of bootlegged copies of anime that's widely sold in North America and Europe. As of 2005, they are currently re-attempting a limited release on DVD with proven market successes such as Full Metal Alchemist and Chrono Crusade.

Since 2005 Odex have released quite a few DVDs on more popular titles like Samurai Seven, Tsubasa Chronicles, Monsters and Gundam Seed Destiny.

1988 Found to license and bring in videos ranging from drama to animation of all kind into Singapore.

2000 Formed the animation section, to license and bring in Japanese animation into Singapore. Thus changing the whole company's direction.

[edit] Packaging

Odex packaging can be seen with two silver strips top and bottom, with the wording "Original Japanese Animation" along with its logo at the side.

For VCD packaging, its a square Boxset, with a CD folder in it containing 6 disc or 13 episodes.

While the DVD boxset is not like the R1 and R2 sets which come in one disc with 2 episodes, but by 3 disc with 12 episodes, using DVD9

Popular belief has it that, the quality of video by Odex is poor by nature. But that is only true when compared with the VCD due to the nature of the medium.

The DVD released by Odex has video quality as good as the R2's DVD release.

[edit] Dubbing & Subtitles

Most or All of Odex's products have Japanese language audio, while some releases also include a Chinese dub. Subtitles come in Chinese and/or English varieties for the VCD release.

For their DVD releases, it is standard for the Japanese Language audio in all DVD release, along with Chinese dubbing in most, some titles even features American dubs.

Subtitle available on Odex's DVD release includes Chinese, English, and Malay.

Its subtitling has been criticised by fans as having a ugly font and sometimes inaccurate translation, when compared with fansubs. Reasons for the ugly font, includes the limitation of VCDs as a medium.

While its Chinese dub, an exported job to Taiwan and China companies is often criticised as monotonous or not as good as the American and Japanese counterparts

With DVD releases, Odex aims to improve the quality of their subtitling and dubbing.
