[edit] Chivalry
Regarding this sentence:
- Certain groups now wish to rescue the term from racist connotations by stating that they desire to celebrate only the things about the Old South which might be considered "good", such as "southern chivalry".
Southern Chivalry is racist in origin because it arose from the Souths fascination with all things connected to Sir Walter Scott, and in particular his novel Ivanhoe, which is set in Feudal times. Chivalry is also of "feudal" origin and was the aesthetic ideal of Scott's novels. Why is feudalism racist? Because many have compared the Southern social system with its lords and serfs, which is why it held such obsession for the south in the 19thC.
